Ulterior Esquire -- Distinguished Alumnus

In the spring issue of Michigan Law's alumni rag, foodie fiend and lapsed lawyer Bonjwing Lee takes a moment away from the hustle and bustle of in-between-jobedness to detail his rise from career failures in screenwriting and law to blistering success as an unpaid hobbyist food writer and photographer.  (He even graces this blog with a swipe, calling it "just so pathetic.")  Onward and upward, UE!

Eater Reveals Yesterday's News

On September 19, 2011, Eater National ran a bloated interview with Bonjwing Lee who, now that he is "a free agent" (read, "unemployed"), no longer feels it necessary to hide behind a pseudonym. His reason for using the pseudonym: "[Law firms] want people that are dedicated to the job.... I didn't want potential employers Googling me and finding this blog."

Will Work for Food

As of January 1, 2011, Bonjwing Lee, aka the Ulterior Epicure, is unemployed. If you know of any openings for a young aviation law attorney or amateur food photographer, tweet our hero at @ulteriorepicure or @bonjwing.

Clue #18: Running with Bonjwing Lee and the Ulterior Epicure

The Ulterior Epicure's Flickr profile lists "running" as one of his hobbies.

Bonjwing Lee was a member of his law firm's team in the 2008 Kansas City Marathon.

Clue #17: Bonjwing Lee is a Pisces (like the Ulterior Epicure)

In Bonjwing Lee's MySpace page, Bonjwing identified himself as a Pisces.

The Ulterior Epicure is also a Pisces.

Per Wikipedia, "Like the rest of the watery signs, Pisces is considered a 'negative', feminine sign, which in Astrology means it is rather introvert."

Clue #16: Bonjwing Lee and the Ulterior Epicure Go to Hollywood

On February 19, 2009, the Ulterior Epicure wrote of his post-college stint in Los Angeles as a "loveless job...in Hollywood."

Bonjwing Lee described his post-college stint in Los Angeles with similar negativity: "worked in hollywood - loathesome."

Bonjwing Lee says he graduated with a bachelor's degree from Northwestern's Communications Department in 2000. Other professional biographies say Bonjwing Lee graduated with a bachelor's degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 2000.

The Ulterior Epicure's restaurant log includes several Los Angeles restaurants in 2000-2001, the same time period in which Bonjwing Lee was working in Hollywood.

Clue #15: St. Patrick & Twenty-seven Years of Teetotaling

On March 20, 2005, the Ulterior Epicure confessed that he was a teetotaler: "While I haven’t disclosed my age (I won’t, but assume I’m 'legal'), not a single person who does know my age hasn’t been absolutely floored when I tell them I’ve never had a drop of alcohol."

Since the Ulterior Epicure did disclose his age to Sylvia Rector of the Detroit Free Press, he would have been 27 when he wrote that. In the same blog entry, the Ulterior Epicure helpfully added: "Ironic, isn’t it, considering I was born on the day with perhaps the heaviest alcohol consumption in the U.S. - something my friends have always lamented because I’ve avoided bars on my birthday."

The Ulterior Epicure was born on March 17, 1978. St. Patrick's Day.

Three years after publicly reflecting on his policy of abstinence, the Ulterior Epicure was yawning over the forgettable wine pairings at Thomas Keller's per se.

Clue #14: Covering Tracks

Please note any broken links in the comments below. Now that the subject of this blog is aware of it, some redactions are being made in cyberspace. Most links and documents were downloaded or copied before appearing on this blog and can be uploaded if necessary to keep the story straight. Updated links will be posted here.

Clue #9: Fumbled Bar Exam? The link to the Ulterior Epicure's February 15, 2007, post titled "Expedition, or hiatus..." is now broken. The blog entry doesn't appear in searches of the Ulterior Epicure's site or in the archives for February of 2007.

Clicking to the link brings up the following message: "Looks like you have a problem here sir/madam. You sure you have the right place? Maybe you got a little lost? Maybe you're looking for something you're not supposed to find? Either way, just go search for it, it can't hurt."

As stated above, the page was copied before appearing as a link here and can be uploaded, if necessary. It isn't necessary, since the original post still appears on the Internet Archive WayBack Machine.

Clue #13: Big Law to Little Law

When Bonjwing Lee accepted his position at Polsinelli in 2007, the starting salary for a first year associate in the Kansas City office was $105,000.

The Ulterior Epicure's restaurant log shows no international travel in 2007, which may have been a hardship to him. Whether he left for personal reasons or was pushed out due to performance (or concerns about his delayed admission to the bar), by the fall of 2008 Bonjwing Lee had left the high dollar, high pressure world of a 300+ attorney law firm for a small law firm of a dozen lawyers.

Clue #12: Catching Up with Bonjwing

On February 5, 2008, the Ulterior Epicure apologized for his silence on the blog and said, "I recently completed an eating tour of Minneapolis. I shall report very soon."

One week before that, on The Adventures of Agustin, Tara & Emilia, Tara wrote:

"Okay, most of you probably won’t be interested in this post, but I thought many of my old Northwestern friends would like to see this picture. My college friend Bonjwing was in town last week and we were able to get together for coffee and catch up, which was really nice, particularly because we hadn’t seen each other in about eight years. He’s a lawyer in his Midwestern home town (to remain nameless because I like to try to maintain people’s anonymity somewhat on this site—why you never see family names—and I know there probably aren’t a plethora of Bonjwings where he comes from) and his stories made me glad I didn’t go that route myself (I considered going into international law; took the entrance exams and everything). If anyone from college is reading this and wants to catch up with him, post a comment and I’ll send you his contact info. Oh, and he’s single and looking, so if anyone’s interested in a serious but funny, well-cultured Republican (but one even a liberal can discuss politics with civilly) boy….."

Clue #11: Summer Clerkship in Chicago

After his second year of law school, Bonjwing Lee accepted a 2005 summer clerkship with Holland & Knight in Chicago.

The Ulterior Epicure's restaurant log shows that most of his meals at upscale Chicago restaurants were in 2005. More detailed dates for the meals (contained in the Ulterior Epicure's Flickr photo sets) show that those meals took place in the months of June through August of 2005--the same time that Bonjwing Lee was in Chicago for his clerkship.

Clue #10: Argentine Adventure

According to the Ulterior Epicure's restaurant log, he visited several restaurants in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in late February and early March of 2005.

In the Spring 2005 newsletter for The National Center for Leadership, Bonjwing Lee is pictured in Argentina with the caption, "Bonjwing Lee takes a break from law school, visiting the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires, Argentina."

On November 3, 2005, the Ulterior Epicure posted a guide to Buenos Aires on eGullet, making specific reference to the Casa Rosada.

Clue #9: Fumbled Bar Exam?

The Ulterior Epicure graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in May of 2006 and reduced his blogging activity while he studied for the bar exam in July of 2006.

Bonjwing Lee graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in May of 2006 and returned to Kansas City, where he was to sit for the July bar exam and begin working at Polsinelli in the Fall of 2006.

Had the Ulterior Epicure/Bonjwing Lee passed the July bar exam, he would have been admitted to the bar on Thursday, October 12, 2006.

But Bonjwing Lee was not admitted to the Missouri Bar in 2006, even though a record 88.6% of test takers passed the July exam. He was admitted to the Missouri Bar in April of 2007, along with other applicants who passed the February 2007 bar exam. Later, he was admitted to the Kansas Bar on September 28, 2007, after passing the July 2007 exam.

After blogging heavily in the winter of 2006 to 2007, the Ulterior Epicure once again had to knuckle down for an undisclosed undertaking. In a post titled "Expedition, or hiatus...," on February 15, 2007--two weeks before the February bar exam in Missouri--the Ulterior Epicure wrote:

"There are times in our lives, unfortunately, that we have to do battle with evil. Sometimes, it is health related or family related… and then there are those times it’s somewhat *gainful employ* related.

"Without getting into too many details, I must remove myself from you cheery world to a nasty time and place and bear down and meet some pressing life deadlines. You may see traces of me about, but for all for all intents and purposes, I will be in the trenches.

"I took this picture today while going out to get the mail… sadly, the only exciting movement I get all day. I think it really captures my emergent undertaking: it will be harsh, it will be cold, I will be alone, and I must be comfortable (yes, for those who are wondering, those are Gap pajama pants, and yes, I did get them on sale at an embarrassingly low sale price).

"But, as some old and very wise man said, it may have even been God Almighty Himself, “And, this too shall pass.”

"I’ll see you all in a few weeks. Don’t worry, I’ll be back."

(This message has been subsequently deleted from the Ulterior Epicure's blog, but can be found at a new link in the "Covering Tracks" post.)

Three months later, with the results of the February bar exam in, Polsinelli announced that Bonjwing Lee was joining the firm as an associate.

After an unexplained month-long break from blogging in July of 2007--the same time Bonjwing Lee was preparing for and taking the Kansas bar exam--the Ulterior Epicure resurfaced on July 28, writing:
"With a couple of mountainous personal tasks out of the way, I’m happily settling back into the hum of the mediocre and quotidian. I never thought I’d say this, but 'how *blissful!*'"

Clue #8: The Ulterior Epicure Goes to Washington

The Ulterior Epicure's restaurant log shows a high level of activity at relatively affordable restaurants in Washington, D.C., in the late '90s and early '00s.

During the same time periods that the Ulterior Epicure was eating cheaply in D.C., Bonjwing Lee worked in Washington as an intern and legislative aid to Republican Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas. Frugality would be a necessity for anyone living on the staffer salary Bonjwing Lee earned.

Clue #6: Bonjwing Lee

The pre-merger web site for Polsinelli Shalton Flanigan Suelthaus PC includes an archive of press releases, including announcements of new hires. Only one new hire announcement, dated May 10, 2007, mentions a University of Michigan Law School graduate:
"Bonjwing Lee joins the firm's Corporate Law practice group as an Associate. His practice includes work in business transactions that touch on securities laws, corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. Lee is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Law."

Clue #5: Polsinelli Shalton Welte Suelthaus

The Career Services web site for the University of Michigan Law School provides a list of law firms hiring the school's graduates from 2005-2007, broken down by city and state. No Kansas law firms hired University of Michigan Law School graduates during that period. Only one Kansas City, Missouri, law firm hired from the school: Polsinelli Shalton Welte Suelthaus PC.

In January of 2007, the name of the firm changed to Polsinelli Shalton Flanigan Suelthaus PC, after David Welte left the firm and Daniel Flanigan was made a named partner, which means the University of Michigan Law School graduate(s) would have come from the class of 2005 or 2006 (i.e., the year the Ulterior Epicure graduated law school). (The firm subsequently merged with another in late 2008 and is now Polsinelli Shughart PC.)

Clue #4: Left Ann Arbor for Kansas City

  • On May 9, 2006, the Ulterior Epicure said that "my time in the little town of Ann Arbor has finally come to an end. Tomorrow, I pack up and head out to the big shiny Bay and lush Valley that is my next food adventure."
  • The reference to his "next food adventure" involved a brief trip, not an ultimate destination, as the Ulterior Epicure wrote on May 30, 2006, "I’m back in K.C. after a whirlwind tour of San Francisco and Napa Valley (will report later) and have waded through boxes upon boxes of why-did-I-bother-to-pack-this-and-ship-it-back-home-crap." ("Back in K.C." indicates he had lived in Kansas City some time before his years at the University of Michigan Law School.)
  • In a June 19, 2006, post on his blog, the Ulterior Epicure wrote, "My latest spell of silence on this blog and eGullet (for those who read) has been due to a time-sensitive undertaking. What spare time I’ve had, between work, and other *necessities of life* have been devoted to my latest pet project - a vegetable garden." The foremost "time-sensitive undertaking" for a recent law school graduate is studying for the bar exam, administered in the last week of July in both Missouri and Kansas.
  • That was the Ulterior Epicure's last blog post until on July 31, 2006, after taking the bar exam, he wrote: "Sorry for my absence, I’ve had a helluva run with life in the past two months. But, on to bigger and better things, like EATING!!"

Clue #3: Speaks Some Mandarin

  • In a January 27, 2006, post on his blog, the Ulterior Epicure provided tips from Chinese-language menus in Kansas City, offered phonetic spellings of menu items (along with a criticism of pinyin: "quite frankly, its method has never made sense to me - for instance, why use 'x' to produce a 'sh' sound when you could simply just use 'sh?'"), and observed that a participant in the comments was using "Cantonese pronunciations."
  • In an eGullet thread in June of 2006, Kent Wang corrected the Ulterior Epicure's spelling of kao fu, to which the Ulterior Epicure replied, "Thanks Kent... for someone who's never learned pinyin, I 'spell by ear,' if you will."
  • In a comment thread below a Flickr photo the Ulterior Epicure uploaded on September 3, 2006, the Ulterior Epicure revealed that "What little I know of the Chinese language is largely in the pinyin realm, so anything that looks vaguely different I assume to be Cantonese in origin."
